Microcarriers

Digital holography allows us to capture cell signals on microcarriers at various confluences. It provides the user with an automated, unbiased measurement of cell confluence on the microcarriers, as demonstrated here using Cytodex 1 microcarriers. The same method can be applied to any round, non-porous, transparent microcarriers.

Some cells can only be cultivated in adherence to a surface. Scaling up an adherent cell culture requires a lot of available surface for the cells to colonize. Increasing the size or number of cell culture vessels, such as multilayered-flasks, can quickly become cumbersome, time-consuming and give unreliable measurements. Switching to microcarriers allows for a large increase of available surface, as well as a decrease in lab footprint. Our technology allows the quantification of cell coverage, and to a certain extent cell density, on transparent microcarriers.
